Green Lipped Mussel Powder Background and Benefits
The New Zealand green-lipped mussel is scientifically known as Perna canaliculus. It also has common names such as the New Zealand mussel, the green-lipped mussel and the greenshell mussel. The green lipped mussel is in the Mytilidae, which are bivalve mollusks. It typically grows on the ocean floor below the intertidal zone that’s exposed during low tide. However, the green lipped mussel can occasionally be found in intertidal zones.
The green lipped mussel is economically important to New Zealand, primarily for food. The shell is green to dark brown and the lips around the edges of the shells are green. This species is especially large and can approach a length of 10 inches.
Lipids comprise the majority of biologically active components in green lipped mussel powder. These components typically account for about eight percent of the powder’s weight, although the collection, transportation and storage methods can greatly affect its specific composition. 4-triglycerides account for the greatest lipid fraction of green lipped mussel power, and other significant fractions include fatty acids, phospholipids and sterols. Omega-3 fatty acids make up about 40 percent of the fatty acids in green lipped mussel powder, and cholesterol comprises about 31 percent of its sterols.
Laboratory studies indicate that activity supporting healthy inflammation management is one of the most significant biological effects of green lipped mussel powder. The inhibition of arachidonate metabolism reduces the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are associated with these conditions. Green lipped mussel powder also contains chondroitin sulfate, which is a major component of synovial fluid and cartilage.

            GlycoOmega Plus

GlycOmega Plus is a proprietary blend of ingredients that uses green-lipped mussels from Aroma, New Zealand. These pristine waters are in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. These growing areas are approved by both the European Union and the United States.
The harvesting of these mussels is regulated by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries. They’re opened in cold water with a proprietary technique that preserves its properties. GlycOmega Plus also contains rosemary, which has antioxidant properties.
GlycOmega contains natural sources of protein, lipids, omega-3 fatty acids and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are a type of mucopolysaccharide. It’s also high in vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and zinc. Additional ingredients in GlycOmega include chondroitin sulphate, glycogen and taurine.
Studies conducted at the University of Queensland, Australia show that GlycOmega may improve joint mobility and gastrointestinal function. It may also support joint and connective tissue by relieving the discomfort caused by arthritis.
